The Shakepay Card is a reloadable Visa prepaid card for Canadian Shakepay customers. It spends directly from your Canadian-dollar balance, not from Bitcoin or another crypto balance at the moment of purchase.
Shakepay now provides both a virtual and physical card. The virtual card can be used online or through Apple Pay and Google Pay, while the physical card adds chip-and-PIN payments and ATM withdrawals.
Eligible purchases earn Bitcoin cashback based on your Shakepay rewards status. The card is issued by Peoples Trust Company under licence from Visa.
No. The Shakepay Card spends Canadian dollars from your Shakepay CAD balance. If you hold Bitcoin or another crypto asset in Shakepay and want to use that value for a purchase, you first need to sell the crypto for CAD.
Once the sale is complete, the Canadian dollars appear in your cash balance and can be spent with the card.
This makes Shakepay different from cards that automatically convert crypto at checkout. The card itself behaves like a CAD prepaid card, while Bitcoin is used mainly for rewards and the wider Shakepay crypto service.
The Shakepay Card is a reloadable Visa prepaid card. You can only spend money that is already available in your Shakepay Canadian-dollar balance.
It does not provide a revolving credit line and Shakepay states that using the card does not affect your credit score. If there is not enough CAD to cover the purchase, the transaction can be declined.
For everyday use it can feel similar to a debit card, but prepaid is the correct legal and product classification.
Shakepay currently pays Bitcoin cashback on eligible card purchases. Base and Bright customers earn 1%, while Blue customers earn 1.5%.
Your status is recalculated each calendar month based on qualifying activity. Bright currently requires either $100 of crypto exchange activity or $200 of eligible direct deposits, while Blue requires $1,000 of exchange activity or $2,000 of eligible direct deposits.
Cashback is paid only in Bitcoin and is added to your Shakepay BTC balance. ATM withdrawals, account funding, bill payments and some other transaction types do not earn card cashback.
Base, Bright and Blue are Shakepay's monthly rewards statuses. Every customer starts at Base, then can move up by meeting exchange or direct-deposit activity requirements during the calendar month.
Base currently includes 1% card cashback and a 3% FX fee. Bright keeps 1% cashback but reduces the FX fee to 1.5%. Blue increases cashback to 1.5% and reduces Shakepay's foreign-exchange fee to 0%.
The statuses also affect other Shakepay benefits such as interest, ShakingSats and priority support. Status is reassessed month by month.
The Shakepay Card has no activation fee and no minimum card balance. Shakepay also says the card itself is free to acquire for eligible fully verified customers.
The main card fee is foreign exchange on non-Canadian transactions. The current rate is 3% for Base, 1.5% for Bright and 0% for Blue customers.
ATM operators can charge their own fees, and foreign-currency withdrawals can also involve the relevant FX charge. The card does not have a separate fee just for earning Bitcoin cashback.
Shakepay currently sets card purchase limits at $5,000 CAD per transaction, $5,000 CAD per day and $50,000 CAD per month. Shakepay says these limits cannot currently be increased.
Apple Pay and Google Pay can have a standard $250 tap limit, although the actual contactless limit can vary by merchant. A physical card with chip and PIN can be useful when a merchant's contactless limit is lower than the amount you want to spend.
ATM withdrawals have separate limits from purchases.
Yes. The physical Shakepay Card supports cash withdrawals at participating ATMs where the relevant Visa or PLUS network is accepted. The virtual card cannot be used at an ATM.
Shakepay currently lists an ATM limit of $500 CAD per withdrawal and $1,000 CAD per day. ATM transactions do not earn Bitcoin cashback.
The ATM owner can charge an additional fee, and foreign withdrawals can also be subject to Shakepay's FX fee according to your Base, Bright or Blue status.
Yes. Shakepay officially supports both Apple Pay and Google Pay. The virtual card can be added to a compatible mobile wallet immediately after card onboarding, allowing online and contactless in-store spending while you wait for the physical card.
When the physical card is activated, Shakepay says existing digital-wallet details can update automatically in some cases.
Mobile-wallet purchases use the same CAD balance, cashback rate and card limits as the underlying Shakepay Card. Merchant contactless limits can still apply.
Yes. Shakepay now issues a virtual card immediately after eligible users complete card onboarding, and its current physical-card guidance says customers are also issued a physical card for delivery to their registered address.
The virtual card covers online purchases and Apple Pay or Google Pay. The physical card adds chip-and-PIN payments, ATM withdrawals and merchant situations where contactless or mobile wallets are not accepted.
Physical availability has previously been rolled out gradually, so the latest in-app card screen should be treated as the final source for your account.
To qualify, you need a fully verified personal Shakepay account, must be a Canadian resident and must only be a tax resident of Canada. The Shakepay Card is not available for business accounts.
Shakepay accounts themselves are currently limited to Canadian residents, and card onboarding includes an additional eligibility questionnaire and acceptance of the cardholder agreement.
This means travellers can use an issued card abroad, but people living outside Canada cannot simply open a Shakepay account to obtain the card.
The Shakepay Visa Prepaid Card is issued by Peoples Trust Company under licence from Visa. Shakepay provides the app, Canadian-dollar account experience, crypto services and Bitcoin rewards programme.
This separation matters because the card is a regulated prepaid-payment product even though Shakepay also lets users buy, sell and hold Bitcoin and other supported crypto assets.
The cardholder agreement and Shakepay Help Centre should be used for card-specific rules, while crypto account terms can cover separate activities such as buying or selling Bitcoin.
Yes. An issued Shakepay Card can be used at eligible prepaid Visa merchants outside Canada, subject to local restrictions and merchant acceptance.
Foreign-currency spending is more attractive at higher Shakepay status levels because the current FX fee is 3% for Base, 1.5% for Bright and 0% for Blue. ATM operator fees can still apply independently.
Shakepay also notes that account functionality can be more limited while travelling abroad, even though the card itself can continue to work. Carrying a backup payment method is sensible for international travel.
Open a personal Shakepay account, complete full identity verification and then go to the Card tab in the mobile app. Tap Get Started, answer the eligibility questions, confirm your address and accept the cardholder agreement.
Once approved, Shakepay issues the virtual card immediately. You set a PIN for the physical card and, under Shakepay's current guidance, the physical card is then mailed to your registered address.
Before spending, fund the Canadian-dollar balance, for example through Interac e-Transfer. Crypto must be sold to CAD first if you want to use its value through the card.
For card, payment or account problems, use Shakepay's official support chat. In the app, go to Settings, Help, Support Chat and Send us a message. You can also access support from the official Shakepay website when signed in.
Shakepay states that it does not offer ordinary customer support by phone. If someone unexpectedly calls and asks for account credentials or verification codes, do not provide them.
The public Help Centre is available at https://help.shakepay.com/en/ and includes dedicated card articles covering fees, limits, rewards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ATMs and disputes.
