FAQs

Questions, answered

The Trade Republic Card is a Visa debit card connected to a Trade Republic cash account. It can be used for normal card payments, ATM withdrawals and, in supported markets, crypto-funded purchases through Trade Republic's Crypto Wallet.

Users can choose a free virtual card, a Classic physical card for a one-time €5 fee or a Mirror card for a one-time €50 fee. There is no monthly card subscription.

What makes the card unusual is its investment-focused rewards. Eligible cash-funded payments can earn 1% Saveback, while crypto-funded payments can earn 2% Crypto Saveback. The reward is invested into a selected savings plan rather than paid as ordinary cash cashback.

Yes. Trade Republic now lets eligible users choose crypto as the funding source for card payments. You activate Crypto Spending in the app and select the cryptocurrency you want to use.

When you make a purchase, Trade Republic sells only the amount of crypto needed and pays the merchant in euros through the Visa network. The merchant never receives cryptocurrency directly.

Trade Republic currently says there is no extra subscription or transaction fee specifically for crypto-funded card payments. However, selling crypto can create a capital gain or loss and may have tax consequences depending on your country. Staked crypto cannot be used until it is unstaked and available for sale.

It is a normal Visa debit card with optional crypto-spending functionality. By default, the card can spend from the cash balance in your Trade Republic account. Eligible users can switch the payment method to crypto inside the app.

If crypto is selected, Trade Republic sells the required crypto amount at the moment of purchase and settles the merchant transaction in euros. That makes it different from a prepaid crypto card with a separate stablecoin card balance.

The card remains part of Trade Republic's wider bank account and investment platform, so users can move between cash spending, crypto spending, Saveback and investment features without ordering a separate crypto-only card.

Saveback turns part of eligible card spending into an investment. Cash-funded card payments currently earn 1% Saveback, while crypto-funded payments earn 2% Crypto Saveback.

To receive Saveback, you must activate the feature and invest at least €50 per calendar month through qualifying savings plans. The accumulated reward is invested into the savings-plan asset you select, usually on the second day of the following month or the next banking day.

The current maximum reward is €15 per month if you spend only from cash and up to €30 per month if you use eligible crypto-funded payments. Certain transactions, including ATM withdrawals, gambling, account funding and cash-like payments, are excluded.

Trade Republic currently pays 2% Crypto Saveback on eligible card payments funded with crypto, compared with 1% when paying from the cash balance.

The 2% rate applies to up to €1,500 of eligible card spending per month, which means the maximum monthly Crypto Saveback is €30. You must also invest at least €50 per month in qualifying savings plans to remain eligible.

The reward is not paid into your cash balance. It is invested automatically into the savings-plan asset you selected. If you mix cash and crypto payments, the final reward depends on the eligible spending made under each funding method.

No. Trade Republic's Crypto Wallet is custodial. Trade Republic Bank GmbH holds customers' crypto, with the majority stored in cold storage through BitGo Europe GmbH, which Trade Republic identifies as a MiCAR-licensed crypto custodian.

Users can send and receive supported cryptocurrencies to external wallets, but crypto selected for card spending remains within Trade Republic's custody until it is sold for the payment.

This differs from a self-custodial crypto card where the user controls the private keys until checkout. The Trade Republic model is designed around integration with a regulated bank, investment account and Visa card rather than private-key control over the card's funding balance.

Trade Republic currently offers three card formats. The virtual Visa card is free, the Classic physical card costs €5 as a one-time payment and the Mirror card costs €50 as a one-time payment.

There is no monthly subscription fee for the card. The issuance charge is normally paid again if you request a replacement or renewal of a paid physical card.

The three versions use the same basic Trade Republic account and card functionality. The main difference is the card format and design, not access to a separate rewards programme. Users who are comfortable paying with a phone can therefore use the free virtual card without paying for physical plastic.

Trade Republic says it does not add a separate foreign-exchange fee when you spend abroad with the card. Foreign-currency card payments use the Visa exchange rate.

That makes the card relatively simple for travel because there is no extra Trade Republic percentage added on top of Visa's conversion. However, a merchant or ATM can still offer dynamic currency conversion or charge its own fee.

When paying abroad, it is usually clearer to choose the merchant's local currency and let Visa handle the conversion rather than accepting a merchant-generated conversion into euros. Crypto-funded payments can also have tax implications because the crypto sale happens before the fiat card transaction is settled.

Yes. Physical Trade Republic cards can be used at Visa-compatible ATMs worldwide. Trade Republic currently charges no ATM fee for withdrawals of €100 or more, or the equivalent in another currency.

Withdrawals below €100 carry a €1 Trade Republic fee. The ATM operator can still add its own surcharge, which is outside Trade Republic's control.

For foreign-currency withdrawals, Trade Republic applies the Visa exchange rate and says it does not add an extra FX fee. The app also allows users to set their own daily and monthly withdrawal limits for security. The free virtual card is mainly for digital and mobile-wallet payments rather than conventional ATM use.

Yes. The Trade Republic Card supports Apple Pay and Google Pay in eligible markets. This makes the free virtual card practical for in-store contactless payments as well as online purchases.

Payments made through Apple Pay or Google Pay still follow the normal daily and weekly card spending limits. Trade Republic notes that the standard contactless limits for the physical card do not apply in the same way to authenticated Apple Pay or Google Pay payments, so mobile-wallet transactions can exceed the usual €50 contactless threshold.

Adding the card to a mobile wallet does not change Saveback eligibility, the selected cash or crypto funding method or the underlying Visa exchange rate.

Trade Republic applies card-level security limits and lets users view the applicable limits directly in the app. It does not publish one universal spending ceiling that should be assumed for every cardholder.

Users can also set their own daily and monthly limits for card spending and cash withdrawals. If a self-imposed limit is exceeded, the transaction is declined until the limit is changed or the relevant period resets.

This flexibility is useful for security because a user can keep lower limits for everyday spending and increase them when needed. For a large purchase, the amount shown in the app should be treated as the authoritative limit for that specific account.

Round up is an investment feature that rounds eligible card payments upward and invests the spare change. For example, a purchase of €3.60 can be rounded to €4, with the €0.40 difference directed into the investment setup chosen by the user.

It is separate from Saveback. Saveback adds a percentage-based reward on eligible card spending, while Round up uses your own money to invest the difference between the purchase and the rounded amount.

Both features are designed to automate investing through everyday spending. Because the rounded amount is invested rather than kept as cash, its value can rise or fall with the selected investment.

Potentially, yes. Trade Republic states that a crypto-funded card payment involves selling the amount of cryptocurrency needed for the purchase. That sale can create a capital gain or loss under the tax rules of the user's country.

The merchant payment itself is still an ordinary Visa transaction, but the crypto sale happens immediately before settlement. This means frequent everyday purchases can create many taxable disposals in jurisdictions that tax gains on crypto sales.

Tax treatment varies significantly by country, holding period and personal circumstances, so users should review their local rules. Trade Republic's transaction records can help identify the crypto disposals created by card spending.

Trade Republic says the Visa card can be used at more than 130 million Visa merchant locations worldwide, including online and in-store purchases. Physical cards can also be used at Visa-compatible ATMs.

Some countries and transaction types are restricted for regulatory or risk reasons. Trade Republic's support documentation currently lists several jurisdictions where in-store payments or ATM withdrawals are unavailable.

Visa acceptance also does not guarantee that every merchant category will qualify for Saveback. Cash-like transactions, account funding, gambling and several financial transaction categories are excluded from rewards even when the card payment itself is technically possible.

Open an eligible Trade Republic account, complete identity verification and activate the card section in the app. You can choose the free virtual card or order the Classic or Mirror physical version for the published one-time fee.

If you want Crypto Saveback, activate Crypto Spending and Saveback, then maintain at least €50 per month in qualifying savings plans. The app also lets you manage card limits, freeze the card and change security settings.

For card, cash, crypto or Saveback issues, use the official Trade Republic Help Centre at https://support.traderepublic.com and the in-app support flow. If the card is lost or compromised, freeze it immediately in the app before contacting support.
